Its a known process when the brain starts to lose oxygen. When we train astronauts we put them in strong centrifuges that simulate 5x the pull of gravity or more. This causes the blood in the brain to stop circulating and temporarily starve out the brain. The subjects pass out and experience all the claimed effects of a "near death experience" including a tunnel of light, hearing family members, seeing people they know, talking to them, etc. Its an effect of the brain firing off everything it can to try and save itself. Allegedly the feeling is euphoric as the brain dumps all kinds of neurotransmitters like dopamine.

Its the process that happens as the brain shuts down. Its been studied pretty well.
