Interestingly enough this doesn't bother me. I almost died in a car wreck, but once I came out of it I realized that "Yeah you're going to die one day, might as well make peace now." - so the realization that I'll cease to be one day, doesn't really faze me any more.

Its something I've always struggled with. Call it the Atheist's Burden if you want. As much as I want there to be an alternative to death, I don't honestly see one, so I can't believe in one. And yeah, that scares me.
Its changed my view on a lot of things. Like I'm pretty anti-death penalty now days. Not because of some peace loving hippy reason, but because I have come to decide that ending a person's existence is on a level of crime that is so horrible and vast that it should never be institutionalized. "what if they are Super Hitler?!" Still. Revenge should never be the goal of Justice and I can't condone ending someone else's existence, institutionalized or not. The only exception would be if it would directly save the life of someone else. (Plus its just wasteful, use the person somehow, ether in science or in physical labor. Don't just throw them away.)
But over time I might come to terms with it. As my daughter grows up and becomes more self reliant its seemed easier to cope with my own mortality. Maybe there actually is something to be said for living vicariously through your children.

I once saw in a few Japanese cemeteries that they plant a tree where they bury the corpse (or its ashes). That way your death creates new life. And I really love that idea.
Where I live we say that a life isn't complete until you have children, publish a book and plant a tree. For me, just knowing that I created life, that I made something good for the world or helped society continue, even if it was just the tiniest bit, allows me to think that I could die in peace. And I'm also atheist, and I also think that life is the most important thing in the world. Not just your own life, but also the ones around you, plants and animals included.
It's really hard to explain. I just kinda feel that life is not something of one individual. You know, when I die I know part of me will stay here and help other life keep living. Be it your progeny, be it plants or animals. It's all a cycle. I know I sound a bit like high or something, but it's what I really think and believe, and that makes me feel in peace enough to accept death.
I don't want to die, but I accept I will someday. I don't need a paradise nor another life nor reincarnation.
