Does something special happen when you reach 100?

I've been lurking for almost a year but now even though I've been active lately, most of my comments go unnoticed so it kinda kills the desire to.

Exactly. Because other new user's upvoats are limited, too, each comment doesn't get very many upvoats. Without that "reward" of an upvoat, there's not much incentive to comment.

Kinda in the same voat. I've had an account since Voat was Whoaverse but I haven't commented much as I usually like to read. And you can't gradually build points by just posting a lot of comments as they default at "0" not "1", but I understand the logic behind that design.

Mine was like that too at the beginning, nothing like seeing 0|0 to kill the urge to participate and not being able to vote at all.

Precisely! Encourage voting, dialog and most importantly restraint once the limits are met. I personally think Voat's CCP requirements to freely up-voat and down-voat helped me regain control over my habits of just voting up or down and not commenting. It also taught me to be a better commenter and to be patient with the process. I had become to accustomed to the instant gratification of having full voting rights on Reddit (and Digg prior) that I lost sight of what discussion should be. The limits made it a game with some challenge that helped bring me out of my shell and become more active in subs that are outside of my normal routine. Voat is teaching me how to Internet again so I don't act like someone who came with the Eternal September and never matured.

I think the limit is a good idea, it is just a bit low at the start, and one of the problems I found with Reddit was the preponderance of pun and joke threads that started with a legitimate post or question. A post will start with a legitimate proposition and the top comments are about “your mother”. I am still lobbying for a two tier voting system with a second tier is agree or disagree, and a down vote is for not appropriate comment for this discussion. The only time I like to down vote someone is when it is an interjection is simply looking for comment points.

yeah, I've been making an effort to comment as well. My submissions do much better than my comments, haha. In fact, my submission score is way higher here already than it was on reddit.

I do kind of wish I could downvoat, but I understand the reasons for the limitations. Just gotta keep on trucking.

I know the feeling, especially when you see all kinds of junky posts on the front page. At least it forces me to check the comments and talk to people to let them know that the link is bogus :P

As someone who can downvoat, I don't understand the reasons.

Well, with a community this small, you have to encourage people to be active, otherwise things become stagnant, if things become stagnant, the content doesn't change, if the content doesn't change, people stop checking the site because it's always the same, then you lose your userbase and the site dies.

It limits brigades. Forcing people to participate before downvoting makes it harder to create multiple accounts to manipulate votes.

Don't get this obsession. I rarely downvote, took me a few hours of regular posting to get to the 100 in any case. Don't see how it's an issue.

I only ever upvote, so I don't miss the ability to downvote, but I do wish I could show my appreciation/approval a little more freely on this site.

I like how the system keeps voting in check. You get enough for the most popular things to reach the top, without drowning out everything else. You're going to be less likely to throw upvotes at everyone just for making basic responses or memes (something that absolutely plagues most forums), and more likely to upvote things that are more worthy.

I hope the system stays as is, personally.

Making you contribute to have downvoating privileges is definitely a smart move; since I've come to Voat, I've come to appreciate the need to avoid downvoating things without thinking. But there have definitely been a couple of submissions I've wished I could downvoat already for various reasons.

You can voat. There are just limitations. You'll get 100 / day once you get to 20, and downvoating @ 100. This is a bit different than some other places. That is a good thing. In my ~5 weeks here, I find the community is fairly tolerant.

[–] Big_Tuna [S] 0 points 12 points (+12|-0) ago

I've never counted how many times I've voted in a day. Do you feel like 100 votes goes by pretty quickly, or have you never even used the maximum votes per day?

[–] snakepaws 0 points 7 points (+7|-0) ago

The first couple days, I hit my limit of 100 because I was interacting a lot, upvoting tons of people, and voting on some of the posts that I wanted to vote before, but left the tab open until I could. Also, I was running out because I wasn't paying attention to the server time. So, it'd be like 3AM where the servers are, but maybe 10PM where I am, so I was dipping into my 100 votes for tomorrow, today.

[–] causuistry 0 points 7 points (+7|-0) ago

I hit the max the first few days I was here. It used to be that after you got to 20, your max was CCP / 2 but atko changed it a few weeks ago. I don't think I have used 100 in a day.

You can see how people voat on their profile page under 'voting habits'.

Ya if you just put yourself out there, only like 1/10 will get lots of voats but it will happen.

I was more enthusiastic about trying to comment when I started, but I’ve kinda stalled at 67 CCP.

I think it helps to comment when a topic is really new. You tend to get a lot more upvoats as you are at the top of the thread.

If you just want to lurk without participating, why would you want or expect the privilege of voating? The best way to get over those first twenty points is to make a post in /v/introductions. And help other new strangers out in that sub too. Before you know it you'll be free to go :)
