Russia was the original Jewish homeland. There was conflicts between the Jews and the orthodox Christian church for hundreds of years. The Jews got control of Russia during their Bolshevik revolution (1917) and proceeded to kill roughly 60,000,000 white Christians over the next few decades. Ultimately the Soviet Union collapsed and the Jews lost control of Russia in the early 2000s when Putin started imprisoning the holdout Jewish Rothschild agent oligarchs. This is about the time the Jewish media really turned against Putin/Russia.
The Oded Yinon Plan for Greater Israel calls for the destruction of Syria. Syria is an important ally of Russia and Russia has a base there. Russia started bombing the US neocon backed/Israeli/Saudi backed ISIS once ISIS threatened to collapse Syria.
Trump and Trump supporters do not support endless wars for Israel and they do not want to destroy Russia or start a nuke war with Russia. This is why the Jewish controlled press (90% of the legacy media in the US) continues to attack Trump and the Americans who voted for him.
I don't know about all the sanctions that may have been placed on Russia, but the ones being talked about in regards to Trump, were a response to the Russian invasion of Crimea.
Overall, there's a belief that Russia is corrupt, doesn't respect human rights, and is pals with enemies of the west. Also it is believed that Russia wants to restore it's control over what was lost by the breakup of the USSR.
Experts and policymakers in both Russia and the United States acknowledge a level of hostility and corrosive rhetoric between the two countries that has not existed since the darkest days of the Cold War. Is this due to conflicting geostrategic interests, or fundamentally opposed ideologies? Unlike during the Cold War, today neither is the case. During the Cold War, two relatively equally matched superpowers competed for geopolitical and ideological control, and allowing nations to fall to communism, into the Soviet sphere, sparked fears of dominos falling. Today, Russia is purely interest-driven, and Russian and American interests need not collide; indeed, there is much opportunity for mutually beneficial cooperation. This is not to say that Americans should not be critical of Russian espionage; covert meddling in the 2016 election; repressive Russian domestic political tactics; or aggressive interventions in Syria, Georgia or Ukraine, among other post-Soviet states. It is simply an entreaty towards an objective, clear-eyed understanding of where Russia poses a threat to American interests, and where it does not.>
They're an international competitor, simple as that. And one whose influence is growing quickly; not to the least because the Kremlin has built its own small media empire that spreads the "Russian point of view" around the world. With American consumers becoming increasingly wary of their own countries media (and to their defense, not without good reason), it's fairly easy for Russian media to influence American viewers.
Compare this too China, which is a greater threat to the US from an economic and military point, but whose attempts to seduce western audiences with pro-Chinese news and propaganda so far have fallen flat on their face. It's a bit ironic, really. If people post something from the Chinese-controlled Global Times, you always get raised eyebrows because everyone and their mum knows its biased at best and propaganda at worst. Meanwhile, many on Voat take RT or Sputniknews (or Zerohedge, but that one is debatable) as the unfiltered word of god.

Here's an essay that talks about this a bit.
