And it's been bothering me for weeks now.
I thought I'd gotten it out by submerging my face in a pot of water and blinking a lot, but it seems to still be there. I've been waking up every day with crap in my eyes, and as the day progresses it gets worse, to the point where I'm rubbing it constantly after about twelve hours awake. It has been getting somewhat better - the first few days were terrible - but it's still annoying as hell.
I'm terrible at adulting, so I have no idea where I go to deal with this, in terms of health care (I'm in the US). Do I go to a normal hospital, do I schedule an appointment with an optometrist, do I just deal with it until it goes away (which was my initial plan, but at two weeks from onset of symptoms I'm not sure that's such a good idea at this point)?

I came here to tell you my experience. I recently thought I had something JUST like this ! It was only a few weeks ago, leading me to believe that the dry weather has something to do to it. I always had something that got into my eyes, I thought it was the bath towels shedding tiny hairs or fuzz and it would get stuck on the edges of my eyelids. I fussed with opening my eyes in the shower or lots of Visene drops. Nothing helped so I totally striped my bed down , washed EVERYTHING through the laundry, washed my floors and eliminated all dust and pollen, took a Reactine allergy pill and I have been perfect for weeks since it happened. I do have some allergies but nothing major. Just my 2 cents.
