When I was studying for my degree [many years ago now] I was walking home after lectures and then a couple of pints. I got to a point on my journey where the road falls away quite steeply and is quite straight for nearly a mile. Standing at the top of where the fall begins I could see that there was a bank of cloud approaching from beyond the horizon, while overhead the sky was, for the most part, clear of cloud. There were numerous bright flashes from above the cloud, but there was no sound. The flashes lit up the sky like daylight [this happened late at night] and silhouetted the cloud that hid the source of the flashes. This continued quite a while: I waited to see what was causing it, but I never found out.

It was not:

An aeroplane/planes/helicopter/other aircraft

A storm

I do not believe it was an explosion/explosions.
