A desk is a series of boxes.
No studs are necessary.

It would all depend on the size of desk and what you plan to build if it is huge you would need to use studs as braces and legs. smaller you might be able to get away with using ply wood as braces. Myself No matter what size I would use studs as braces and legs. I wouldn't suggest using box joints on ply wood. The layers are what makes it strong and if you try to put box joints in it like on solid wood it could compromise it. That is theory because I have never heard of any one using box joints on ply wood.
