Atko mentioned that an integrated media hosting system was in the works, so this should be resolved soon.

As for slimgur, I wouldn't go for it. Slimgur was more specifically created as a place to host images from /r/fatpeoplehate when imgur admins were removing them. There's a lot of people on voat (myself included) that would rather dissociate themselves from the reddit drama.

People need to realize that voat has been around for a while and isn't exclusive to fatpeoplehate exiles!

And even a portion of the new users aren't there because of the Fattening but because of the crackdown on free speech and the ideology behind that.

They want a safe haven without all the drama.

fatpeople hate fiasco is why i came over, but this has been building for me for a long time. the site is too PC, the mods too eager to limit speech and content.

Can confirm, my account is 11 months old. Even 11 months ago I noticed an increasing amount of censorship on reddit. FPH and the introduction of "safe spaces" was just the metaphorical last drop for many.

I didn't become active on voat at first because there was hardly any activity at all. Posts would hardly reach 10 upvoats when I joined. Now that there are enough people here, I've decided to stop lurking :)

I agree. The drama baggage that comes with using slimgur isn't worth it. It would reflect poorly on Voat, IMO.

you guys care about this shit too much. It would reflect poorly to who? Who do we care about that might judge us for using slimgur.com.

Use Veuwer! Was made for Voat!

I'll have to disagree with Slimgur. Even the front page of that site is fat-shaming...

I believe it was coded by a Voater for Voat as well. More reason to use it.

Well then that sounds about perfect, doesn't it? Veuwer it is.

Does Veuwer remove Exif?

That's one of the highest priority optimization features at the moment.

If I could make a couple of requests:

  • right-click and rehost image browser extension (main reason I'm still using imgur)
  • make the urls work with extensions like hover zoom

[–] moe 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago  (edited ago)

Hover Zoom needs to add its own sieve for non-direct image links from Veuwer. That's something that you need to request of the Hover Zoom creator(s), not @Icy-Defiance.

Also, use Imagus [Chrome] [Mozilla] instead of Hover Zoom. It doesn't track you and it's just as (if not more) useful — it even has a sieve for Veuwer.

Moe is right about Hover Zoom, but the browser extension is a good idea. I'll add it to my very long todo list.

I have the programming knowledge and web server to make an image host if there is enough demand..

I'll message Atko and see if we can partner..

What should the name be?

Check out /v/veuwer for an existing project.

There is definitely demand. Overwhelming demand. Build it and they will come.

IIRC this was coded by a voater as well, for Voat.

http://voato.net – done ;D I havn't used any script like slimgur for example and developed it myself so there are nearly no features yet. But I will improve it in the next days, as I have some time.

I use imgs.center, it has only one ad on pages, let's creating albums just like imgur and has no limits for user's storage

Nobody here's mentioned Postox yet, seems like a decent alternative. Does anyone have something to say about it?

[–] j_ 0 points 7 points (+7|-0) ago  (edited ago)

This is what I had to say about Postox:

just announced [a few days ago] on Voat. Runs Chevereto like Slimgur. TOS and Privacy Policy were copy-pasted from Voat's, so I don't believe a word of it.

FYI, Chevereto is a proprietary/commercial image-hosting software package. You can buy a domain name, a Chevereto license and/or a hosting plan that includes the software for ~$100 and have your own Postox/Slimgur equivalent in 24hrs.

@Postox has not addressed any concerns about the TOS and Privacy Policy other than to admit he did copy them, and he has also stated his intention to run ads:

Keeping it afloat today is my own cash. When needed I would put adsense but I have spots already carved out that would not interfere with the user experience.

I don't mean to be overly critical of it — I like free things, the more free things for everyone the better — but there is currently no incentive to use Postox over any of the 1,000's of public, free, Chevereto-based sites. Some examples:

There is MediaCrush, which is open source: https://github.com/MediaCrush/MediaCrush

It worked pretty good as a website (https://archive.is/rncXz).

Ads are irrelevant on an image site since power users link to the image.

Why are you upset about people creating them for $100? How much did you think such a thing cost?

You seem to take personal offense to someone making money on it. This is something I've noticed on reddit for years now and it's silly.

http://postox.com/ seems like a good alternative, however I haven't seen any info regarding the person who created the website (besides them posting a link on Voat). Would like to see what their motives are and what their limits of support is before committing to their website.

Overall I like their website design, just don't want to get in a situation where they have power over Voat or push their own agenda.

Fuck all of the sites that are using that image hosting framework.

Too many of those clones, I'm sick of seeing that exact same goddamn layout over and over. I'll stick with puush and imgur for now.

[–] Oeoeoeoeoeoeoe 0 points 0 points (+0|-0) ago

what does postox hold over imgur? postox is not a memorable, image-reminder friendly URL nor is it substantially different from other clone image hosters. Who's to say that postox won't be offline in 13 months?

[–] Freddy_Mercury 0 points 9 points (+9|-0) ago

imgscenter.com is really good, it's fast and it doesn't charge users for storage, it has also a shorter url: imgs.center

Why do all the clone websites look the same? is there a central codebase they are based on? (ofc there is but what is it called?)

[–] Zavec 0 points 1 points (+1|-0) ago

On mobile so I can't check right now, I'd guess both are using bootstrap and similar layouts

[–] 18andover 2 points 7 points (+9|-2) ago  (edited ago)

Absolutely not. Imgur is the best image host. Not using them would be a disservice to Voat. You should remember not all of us hate reddit or imgur. And we aren't all using Voat in some sort of protest.

[–] Qi 0 points 1 points (+1|-0) ago

Agreed. I'd used imgur premium for quite some time and I'm not a reddit defector.

With the connection of Reddit to Imgur I understand why people don’t want to use that service.

However two things:
(1) Imgur is currently working fine while Voat still has its problems. So at the moment I think it is not a good idea to double frustrate people by switching to an unreliable service.
(2) There certainly should not be a Voat wide ban on Imgur links. I want Voat to be ban-free zone.
