You are almost there. The electricity in the wire is heading towards ground. Should a source of electricity found its way in a bath tub full of water and a human, the electricity would cause the current contained in the electrical source to travel through the water, through the pipes, and finally to ground. The human sitting in the tub, by virtue of water having nearly zero impedance and because the amount of current flowing from the electrical source to ground would be so great, the human would be toast.

The electrons are at war with the water molecules, and your body contains water molecules and is therefore considered enemy territory.

Water (with dissolved ions) is far more conductive than the air but slightly less conductive than a wire.
