I was coming here to read the shit show. Ive never talked to someone who really enjoyed there time in the millitary. My dad is probably one of the very few who got in and out after a long career and didnt have to much negative effects. He ended up air force senior master sargent how he was not an officer is beyond belief considering his work ethic etc.

Tagging on as Army, over 7 years as electronics tech in a now-defunct MOS in aviation. Anything aviation or tech related, I'd be willing to answer.

Thanks for your reply, I actually have a question about field artillery.

Could you tell me some of those fond and not so fond memories? Artillery is pretty interesting to me

Army. In during GW1.(Nuclear,Biological,&Chemical Warfare). Hated it. Here are my Recommendations:

1) Learn an actual trade like HVAC repair, engine repair, or something that actually translates into a real civilian career. Driving a tank is fine, but it won't help you any when you get out.

2) Join the Air Force. They get to sleep in nice beds each night and rarely get shot at.

3) Understand you will get more booty in the Army than at any other time in your life. DO NOT MARRY THESE GIRLS!

4) Listen.

5) Save your money. The military provides you with food, clothing, shelter, and Healthcare. There is no reason you need to spend that money. Save it for school.

USMC - Blows balls. To be honest, the military fucks you for the civilian life, and it's hard to completely transition back into it. The military life is retarded, especially for Marines since we have to always look the best and abide by ridiculous bullshit regulations unlike the other branches.

Hands in your pocket? Nope. Eating and walking at the same time? Nope. IP on your uniform? Nope. A pube left on the toilet seat? Nope. You have an opinion? Nope.

While I did have some good times and laughs, I wouldn't do it again. Maybe Air Force though... heard they got nice chairs.

Marines. Joined right after 9/11. Saw/Did dark things. Rather not talk about it too much. 99% of my fellow Marines were bored to tears. It's nothing like the movies.

Marine for 6 years as SIGINT. Life sucks, you are continually pushed till you are, or near broken. You are kept in the worst conditions they can find. Every barracks has black mold in the walls that they refuse to take care of and deny it exists until it seeps through the walls and you have to get a reinspection on Saturday for not cleaning it. A/C isn't a thing unless you are cooling servers down. The food sucks. You get less awards and pick up much slower than the other branches. Mass punishments are constant, and harsh, and nearly every freedom you have is taken away on a regular basis. Nearly all of our equipment is used and outdated due to having only 15 percent of the budget the other branches have.

Bonuses: Comradery is much stronger than the other branches (mostly because of shared shitty experiences), there are less shitbags to deal with typically, it requires a higher ASVAB score, so although there are plenty of rocks, it isnt as bad as some branches, the training is more intense so the average is higher, and the overall sense of pride tends to be higher.

Overall, it depends on what you are looking for. If you want an easy life and easy military esque job, go Coast Guard.

It really can be rewarding in its own way. If you are just looking for the benefits, an easy ride, or money, this definitely isn't the one for you. If you are looking for comradery that you will not find anywhere else, a very difficult challenge, and good life skills (provided you pick the right MOS), it can be great.

Like many have said, the unit makes a huge difference in life and work quality. I know some people that are and have been skating very well, and I know others that are absolutely miserable out the gate. As much shit as I talk about it, there are definitely aspects I miss, and even though I am now broken, I still do not regret joining in the grand scheme of things.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I will answer.

Army years ago. Did not enjoy it. I went to pay back college, they fucked me on that. Lot of MORONS are in the military. Like could barely pass the ASVAB dumb. It wasn't all bad but I was pretty bored the whole time, pay was shit considering your life is the military. If I did it again I would pick a more fun job. I was in the JAG units. I got stuck state side due to my job. I tell people if you have literally no other option, do it. Or if you KNOW you want to make a career out of it, do it. Other than that, pass.
