Archived Has anyone had an experience with a condo association? (AskVoat)

Just curious, has anyone here ever bought a condo? Did the condo association force you to pay for a bunch of services regardless of whether or not you actually use them (e.g. cable TV, gym membership)? Is there a way to ensure you get a condo association where you only have to pay for the basic maintenance and utilities and the extra stuff being opt-in if they have it and you want to use it? Do issues like this commonly happen with rentals as well?
EDIT: this article makes it sound like such a thing would be illegal for apartments and possibly condos http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/story?id=3804497&page=1 though maybe they could still say "you must buy a bundle or do without" in which case I could maybe just get an unlimited plan for my phone and tether if I want internet and cell phone service only.

This sounds bizarre and illegal. That said, there are great HOAs and horrible, sick twisted HOAs. It's the first thing I check before I buy.
