I'll probably still visit on the side, but only to the handful of subreddits that I frequented for information. r/all being my almost-default home page has already stopped and gone, and I'm more productive for it.

Yeah same here. Despite this place clearly being the new best 'discussion board', reddit's pure weight of numbers means some stuff will likely work better there for at least a few months, until even more people subscribe to VOAT.

I have no idea why reddit never incorporated the RES functionality. The image handling here is superb.

Last I heard it was something about added load or something. I could be wrong though.

Still, it's nice not needing "Voat Enhancement Suite" :)

According to Atko's post here, Reddit's code is outdated and junk. They are basically just patching shit together there to keep it running. That's why RES was never integrated.

The image handling here is superb.

It really is. I didn't much care for RES; I thought it had too much crap that wasn't really useful which made it big and clunky. The only thing that Voat doesn't have that RES did, which I'd like to see, is being able to add custom tags/notes to users.

IMHO if I were to rank the layouts I'd say that it goes:

Reddit w/ RES > Voat > Reddit w/o RES

Voat seems to have a much nicer community, at least for the moment. Mostly because the community is mostly ex-redditors who share my same view. Voat could still use a few of the features that were on reddit, but overall I'm starting to prefer Voat to reddit.

I've noticed that everyone seems to be a lot nicer here as well. Which is kind of funny seeing that everyone who came here were branded as the dickish crowd.

I deleted my reddit accounts. Here's what I really like about Voat that's different from reddit and what convinced me to stay here aside from the censorship:

  • The site looks smoother, not as boxy and choppy as reddit
  • Sleek interface with more default options
  • Smaller community to feel closer with in all subverses
  • Encouragement of discussion rather than "look another fucking pun thread burying relevant information"
  • More investment in helping to see a website grow, rather than be a random in a huge crowd
  • I can create a thousand alts so that I can sell the names on ebay eventually (just kidding)
  • No email required to signup. Seriously this is huge for me, I don't like big brother watching over me. That's my job as the oldest of 3.
  • Voat isn't a money-grab
  • I won't be nearly embarrassed to express differing opinions from others on this site, based on earlier discussion point

And so many more.

Seriously. Fuck those goddamn pun threads in every post. It was cute the first 3 posts, but now I just scroll through it. Let's hope it stays away from Voat.

We need to start down-voting these kind of posts from the beggining, as to not let them gain traction.

That's one of the things that makes me hate reddit. Even when someone wants a serious discussion or wants an actual conversation it's filled with stupid fucking people saying rekt or oh shit you broke your arms, where's your mom.

Like I would be able to tolerate it if it was every few posts but no. It's literally multiple times every single post.

You aren't funny and you aren't original. They only people who upvote that shit is people who think they are in some secret group. Then go out in public saying the same shit off reddit and people think they are weird. I hope reddit dies and the boring ass rekt commentors go down with it.

One of the greatest features implemented on Reddit was the ability to hide comment threads and move on. I'd see a pun start and immediately minimize it.

It's just not the kind of content I like. I think it'll probably stay on Reddit though, until it shuts down since why would they want to leave something that still works for them?

I hate to piggy back on your comment, but you've got most of my personal thoughts already written out. I'll be staying here for sure. I do tend to browse Reddit still, for content and some communities that haven't spread over yet. But honestly, I'm waiting on a verse request over here, and as soon as that happens I'll be spending all my time here.

Some points I would like I add.

  • Native dark theme, solid winner right away.
  • On top of the smaller community comment, I feel like what I have to say matters more here.
  • Atko is a real person who still talks to us. I know this won't last like it is now forever, but it's nice knowing were people to him, not $$.

I really don't like the layout, though. The interface is great and all, and it is smoother, but come on... Make it fill my entire screen. What's with all of the blank space around the actual content?

0
1

[–] cravf 0 points 1 points (+1|-0) ago

I honestly don't mind it. My screen is too wide for me to read anything sprawled across it. I think there's something to be said about a small text layout.

Haha, I so agree with the username part - when I signed up for reddit all the good ones were taken, now I've made a couple of accounts on voat where I have the opportunity to have a much better choice for usernames!

I'll stay here, Reddit was going downhill anyway. It's time for something new. It'll take me a while to get used to the way things are but I like it and think it has far greater potential.

And a shorter URL. That's three fewer letters to have to type, like, a thousand times a day, that adds up!

Reddit has gone WAAAY downhill from when I first started using it about 4-5 years ago. Back then it was much smaller and the community was a lot more interesting and genuine, where now people even put a "cat tax" into things like DIY picture albums. So much circle jerking for a website that everyone knows about. Maybe this all happened just because reddits community got so big. For a while at least, Voat will be that small interesting community that reddit was in days of yore.

[–] pink_marshmallow 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

Yeah, but I was holding on for as long as possible just because I was used to the site and it was sort of a habit. I was always looking for new, smaller subs that were interesting constantly. No doubt this place will eventually get big and then decline but I'm enjoying how small it is for now.

"cat tax"

What does this mean?

[–] jump 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

Yeah, Reddit's starting to feel like standing on the deck of the Titanic. I haven't deleted my account on Reddit, because Voat does need some improvement and more users to feel the same for me... But if it gets that, which I can definitely see it doing, I will move over completely.

Do you really want the same number of people? More people = more trolls

Sure the community could stand to grow but you get reddit's following you get reddit's flaws.

I plan to stay on Voat. Pao is not the real problem of Reddit, but rather a symptom of the leadership and censorship. A lot of people have interest in the control of information on the big subs of Reddit, and they control these after their own will. Like we witnessed with the "Fattening". Small groups of mods with an almost unlimited control of content on loads of subs, a huge amount of bad jokes and reposts and a declining quality of comments/discussions are major reasons I want to leave Reddit (yes, some small subs like /r/polandball are still great).

Voat the goat seems perfect.

One of the biggest things I hate about reddit is the people who rehash the same jokes. Like I honestly don't understand what makes people think they are funny for commenting rekt on every single thread.

Pao is not the real problem of Reddit, but rather a symptom of the leadership and censorship.

Exactly. I don't want Pao to quit, as she's only empowering those that already have taken over the site. It's those shitty admins and mods that make the site what it is. Give it time and Reddit will become 4chan+ (feminism/sjw shitposting) with or without Pao.

They will have to if they want to retain their "new market share". I would think that the way their numbers have jumped in the past few days would provide the impetus to do so.

I'm dual-browsing reddit and voat, because I like voat's potential to restart some of the communities that suffered on reddit, because they got too big and started the usual descent with simple karma grabbing posts, circlejerks and railroaded hivemind-'discussions'.

They will probably suffer the same fate, but till then I can enjoy them.

I'm staying. Reddit has too many problems to fix now. Getting rid of a CEO, or reinstating the banned subreddits wont fix the problem. Voat is home now.

Im loving it so far! Hopefully they can keep up on the server end, it really has everything great that reddit used to have, and the developers seem passionate and excited about it.

I plan on using both.

I will still consume content on Reddit because the subreddits I follow are very vibrant compared to their counterparts over here. That said, plan on stopping my content creation @ Reddit and post in the subverses here instead. It's a catch 22 if people don't post because there is no content.
