The internet isn't a thing so much as a technology. We're all referring to one entity when we say the internet but if the internet as we know it died or was suffocated to the point of near death, it'd be only a matter of time before alternative internets rose up. In the worst case scenario, you'd have like intranets begin to spring up and these could eventually be connected. It might sound mediocre, but for anybody who was in tech more than about 20 years ago, they probably used BBS' which are similar except it was one person connecting to one other person using telephone tech - and they were surprisingly awesome.

In any case it might lead to an ideal scenario of dual worlds internet. You'd have the primary internet which could be commercialized, censored, and controlled. Folks that are happy with this and just want Facebook, Twitter, and so on - which accounts for many, if not the vast majority, of people could continue using this internet. People who wanted more freedom and were willing to jump through some tech hurdles could utilize the alternet.

I think the chances of it coming to this, out of necessary, are extremely close to 0. However, I do think we could see the rise of alternets out of enthusiast interest and experimentation acting as supplements or light competitors to the current internet.

It won't die. It'll become like cable television though. Think of an internet subscription package that only allows you to visit certain websites. An example would be that for 80 bucks a month you could get MSNBC, Reddit, Facebook and about 100 other websites. If you wanted to you could upgrade your package and get around 250 sites for around 50 bucks more. That is the ultimate goal of most ISPs.

There are some projects out there that aim to create a decentralized version of the internet (aka mesh network) that would be immune to censorship. My point is that we need to have a replacement to the internet before it becomes taken over completely.

Why would it die? Would anyone buy a product that only allowed you to visit certain websites? Even if so wouldn't there still be a demand for current internet service that someone could provide and make money doing so?

Spam (bots), propaganda (bots) all fill the Internet with useless data.

Yes. Your ISP will have the legal power to censor your content and voice.

So says everyone. So the Internet will die as we know it.
