I saw a video series on PBS many years ago that analyzed the religion's origins from the perspective of the history record itself. The one thing I remember is how changes were made to the rules of the religion to adapt to the changing situations that Mohammad was experiencing. Big things like the original rule to pray facing Jerusalem because he thought it would be easier to convert Jews, but later changed the direction to the black cube in Mecca when he found out that Jews weren't so easily converted. I think the video series was based on a University course. Sorry I don't have the actual source.
