For every dozen promising new technologies, very few if any can make the transition from laboratory to economical mass production, however, the only way we can make progress is to keep trying, Commercially available batteries have made leaps and bounds, however it can't happen over night. We went from Lead-Acid to Ni-Cad to NIMH to Lithium Ion or Lithium Polymer. The next technology is coming, but it might not be any of these.

Yes and no. The actual battery technology probably isn't going to change, but the industrial scale price on lithium batteries has been dropping about 5% per year for a given performance point, with a pretty low bottom on this path (the cost of materials is around 3% of the cost of making a lithium battery) which is a big part of WHY it's not going to change, by the time any new tech reaches a marketable price lithium batteries will be much cheaper.
