Does the heart stop due to asphyxiation / chock or due to something else?

Probably from Shock. Shock can be extremely dangerous and relatively easy to set in.

If you're really good at scaring people, could you hypothetically kill people by shock without even physically hurting them?

I'm not too sure in this case. It may be the stress and fear combined with the immense pain that overworks the heart until it ends up out of sync, then it starts to falter before stopping all together. I'm no medical student, so this may be wrong.
