A Republic is a form of government where people elect a representative to make laws for them. Democracy is purely based off of majority rules. A republic protects the minority while a democracy doesn't.

This is almost all I remember from high school government.

Democracy is direct rule by the people in that every single person's vote counts at the national level. In America, each state votes for 2 Senators and anywhere from 1 to 53 Representatives, depending on population. These elected officals go to Congress and make the votes on behalf of their state's populus. This representation creates what we call a representative republic, instead of a direct democracy.

A republic is a representative democracy typically. A democracy is where you and I would all vote on legislation but that is unreasonable for the sake of amendments and points of order alone so we elect representatives to vote for us.

A republic allows for multiple groups to hold power - like Voat - but the democracy is like reddit - a hivemind.

All of the other answers are close, but incorrect. A republic - like ours - can be a form of democracy. And a democracy - like ours - can be a form of a republic. A republic is a form of government that has a set of laws limiting the powers of the government. In the United States, our constitution defines the government's powers and its limitations. At the same time, we have the power to amend the constitution by vote; elect our leaders; etc. So we are a republican democracy. On the other hand, we are not a direct democracy (few, if any societies ever are). A direct democracy (a/k/a pure democracy) is a society governed by the will of the majority, without any limitation. Its utilitarianism in its unadulterated form, with no checks or balances. So, in a pure democracy, if a majority of people voted to sacrifice a left-handed people, no law would prevent them from doing that.

It is a Republic because you do not directly vote for President or the laws of the land. We elect people to go and do that for us.

They are not contradictory. When people say this they are normally confused about what a republic is.

If a country is a republic that merely means that the government rules with the consent of the people, or claims to. Even a diret democracy is also a republic, since it is the people who have control of the country.

Normally when people say this they either are repeating something they heard or they mean that the US isn't a direct democracy, which some folks see as the only "real" democracy.
