If you are serious about having something for home defense that can be used with a minimum of training (notice I did not say NO training), you can't beat a shotgun. Remington 870 and Mossberg 500 are the two most popular shotguns for that purpose, and used examples of either can be had at most gun stores for a few hundred dollars. Buy one with a stock, not the stupid birdshead pistol grips. Those are great on TV but uncontrollable and painful to your wrist in reality. Shotgun shells are so cheap and readily available that you can shoot whenever you feel like it, and hopefully it will be something you have fun doing so that you continue practicing until you are a good shot.
