Computers need continuous upgrades. I have an open case self built PC where I regularly upgrade parts when I can afford them and when the price gets at my price range. So I have always an up to date PC that will last 5 years from the moment I become jobless and can't afford to buy a new PC.
Also when I look at the prices of hardware now and year ago I probably would only have saved 50-70 bucks. Why would I have been on an old ancient slow PC when for 70 bucks I could have gone screaming hard?
I went to the self build PC so I bought a giant case, tons of cooling and a 1200W power supply. Just to be safe that I have enough room and power for anything that I want to put in there. That PC runs extremely cool and this in turn makes this PC very long lasting if I ever give it to my partner when hers break down.
