I've got a new hobby, as an oldish retired guy.
Learning Sanskrit. Why, you ask? Because it's extremely structured and well defined. The definition of the entire Sanskrit grammar is defined in Sanskrit itself, and can be recited from memory in under 3 hours. (Computer scientists, take a look, you'll like what you see.)
One of the big names in American academia is Sheldon Pollock. Turns out much of his work attempts to blame Sanskrit and Indo-Aryan supremacy theories as the inspiration for Nazi Aryan ideas.
Turns out Sheldon's bio is mighty thin. His full name is Sheldon Ivan Pollock. Pollock is both a Scottish name and a Jewish name. Could it be?
After some googling I find his parents' names: Abraham and Elsie Pollock. Abraham, eh? This doesn't look good for Sheldon. Let's see what we can see for Elsie, shall we?
Oh dear, poor old Elsie handed in her dinner pail in 2008. And there it is. "She was a member of Tifereth Israel Congregation, New Bedford and Temple Beth El, Fall River; as well as a member of Hadassah and ORT."
Every. Fucking. Time. Even in the most obscure reaches of academia.
Turns out that Indians don't particularly like Sheldon either. His theories linking their language with power, oppression don't go down well except with a couple of ignorant Indian billionaire sponsors. What's particularly laughable are Sheldon's feeble attempts to claim that Muslim rulers supported Sanskrit over Persian and Arab!
One guy's written an entire book ripping Sheldon apart. But he misses out on the JQ, as Indians don't seem to have much knowledge of these people.
