Why don't these programs have hefty residency requirements. Like 5 years.

I'll go work at a ski hill for 5 years then retire at 40.

Sounds like a sad existence.

You've got a strange definition of 'gravy train' if that's just enough money to have a house, food, and the other bare essentials.

Ironically areas with basic income though would be awesome to get a job, even a McJob. Even just $10.85/hour going straight into your pocket as opposed to spending all of it just on those basic necessities would indeed be very comfortable. In general I think basic income and minimum wage should be mutually exclusive. No need for a minimum wage with a basic income since there is a genuine free market of labor prices when people can actually say no.

It'd also be a good place to startup a company again for the same reasons. You don't need to hit the black so fast and you can get other people involved, on revenue share, without a huge capital infusion.

Alternatively, the cost of "just getting by" could suddenly jump by exactly the basic income, and income taxes would rise so idiots in van with 1.4 million dollar homes they can't afford start going bankrupt in droves...

I think basic economics works here - the invisible hand of the market and competition. Imagine Joe and Isai both own similar shops with a similar customer base. Isai sees his customers suddenly have 10% more income on average and so decides to arbitrarily raise his prices 10%. Joe decides not to. Isai is going to lose customers, Joe's going to win them. Collusion would be normal concern with Joe and Isai both secretly agreeing to raise their prices - and exactly the same amount. But on a all-of-society scale, collusion isn't too big a concern.

We also have lots of data points to explore and will have many more in the near future as lots of countries (and even some private companies) are beginning to carry out basic income tests. And in general there has been minimal inflation associated with basic income type programs.

The stampede will begin momentarily and the fake paper work kiosks are in place.

Why? I'd have a bankroll going, if I were to do this. 1800 bucks a month will go quite a long way. Strata fees, utilities, insurance, lift passes and food would be the bulk of expenses. You're also allowed to work without any loss of the BGI, if they follow Ontarios proposed model.
