code academy is good for start, learn basic concepts of your chosen language, then move on to setting yourself challenges.

pic related is similar to what I did to learn, remember that you're not supposed to know everything. When it comes to coding,at all times you will have internet, and you have to learn to use this as your resource.

IMO calculator and then simple challenges are way to go

I've never written a compiler. There's a difference between writing a simple one with limited functionality and a complete one. The internet is filled with a bunch of arrogant nobodies. There is no fucking reason to write a compiler unless out of interest because you want to work in implementing programming languages.
