I have a theory on this. You're absolutely correct on the computational power. 1000 random people will have an easier time than 10 choice people, even if there's a lot of crap thrown around.
So my theory is that 'the best' goes through several layers before it rises to the top. First, you have raw data everyone combs through. If someone finds something, they'll post it, most of which is shit. However, this layer is slightly more refined. Others will sift through it and pick out the good stuff, debate it, and talk about it. During this stage, others will create lists, charts, pictures, and screenshots to help out. Afterwards, people will make a semi-final or final compilation of the data, usually in easy to understand info-graphics.
