He's right.

For decades, probably going back to Freud the Psychopath, a common trope that voice memed it's way into awareness was the rhetorical question; "what do women want?".

Because there's no answer for that.

They need external direction and fight it at the same time, so you have to build some finesse into your guidance.

He: Where do you want to go for dinner?

She: I dunno, anywhere is OK.

You have to ask anyway. When you pick a place she criticizes, you either take it personally or realize she's just trying to set standards for herself and doesn't know a better way, or you put your energy into finding someone that appreciates. Personally, I think the latter may be a man's best option, but keep in mind, it's been a long time since moms taught their kids manners and courtesy; and I think that's really the crux of a lot of this shit.

If you don't like the choice someone makes, don't criticize the choice, just ask them why they chose that one.
