I have no doubt this kind of thing has been going, for some time. Maybe even before the internet, for example, if you were suspected of thinking something controversial while in high school, they'd communicate this to the admissions, at college, and some people would single you out for trouble.

Anyways, the key element here, is to seek power outside of the hierarchical power structure. That takes a big chunk of power away from (((them))) if you are not directly dependent upon their institutions/corporations/colleges/universities.
