Check your belt tension. You may have knocked that motor loose (or possibly tighter) and the belt is making more vibration at a resonant frequency of the frame. Also, try unplugging the new fan to see if it changes anything. The motor may be skipping some steps but that's only a possibility given you've swapped out motor drivers to no effect.

belt tension was my first thought but they are not over tight, the spring still has some give left. but if i disconnect the stepper motor wires its fine. the fan doesn't change anything, that was my second step.

Hmm, do you have another stepper motor to test with? Could you maybe swap another axis motor for this one and see if the problem moves or stays put? It kind of sounds like the motor is missing steps but that would mean the problem is on the main board rather than a motor driver board since that made no difference when you changed it out. Swapping two axes would narrow that down a little more so I guess that would be my suggestion now.

Check all your connections. You've got a short somewhere.

Nothing visible. At least not easily. I'll take it farther apart tomorrow.
