I like the idea of people having a choice. If you like what reddit is doing, stay there. If not, come on over to voat.

Greece defaults on IMF payment despite last-minute overtures to creditors submitted by Scine to news

skselby 1 points 5 points (+6|-1) ago

Greek banks are short on cash and can't give people the money they put into their checking and savings accounts. Greece has closed the banks and limited ATM withdrawals since the banks don't have very much cash. This has caused a lot of stress for Greeks.

Greece votes on July 5 whether to keep using the Euro or start using a new currency, the Drachma. The new currency wouldn't have much value outside of Greece and no one would want to loan money to the Greeks since they won't pay back the money they borrowed previously. This will cause the Greeks to not be able to buy goods at a reasonable price from the rest of the world, but Greeks goods (and Greek vacations) will be cheap.

The rest of Europe has had 5 years to prepare for this. Although a few people might not want to lend money to the rest of Europe, I don't think it will matter much. European goods will be a bit cheaper to buy and Europe will buy fewer goods from everyone else but this will be a minor problem.

Frankly, not much impact to us here in the US.

What are you arguments for AND against a minimum wage increase? submitted by Frijolito to AskVoat

skselby 0 points 5 points (+5|-0) ago

Arguments for a higher minimum wage:

  • It will redistribute income from business owners to workers and more income for workers will lead to greater spending in the overall economy

  • It allows business to collude (via the government) to keep wages low, which would be illegal absent the government involvement

  • It will reduce government spending on income assistance

  • It will encourage more people to join the labor force which will provide more workers and grow the economy

Arguments against a higher minimum wage:

  • It will result in job losses for people employed at the minimum wage

  • It will cause businesses to replace minimum wage workers with automated equipment

  • It will cause business to raise prices which will cause inflation

  • It will cause some business to fail which will cause job losses for people employed at minimum wage

Voat, what does it take for you to consider someone an "active" user? submitted by PricklyPear to AskVoat

skselby 0 points 0 points (+0|-0) ago

I suspect that the active users issue is caused by using CloudFlare to speed up the site and prevent DDOS attacks (which was absolutely necessary). I've only noticed that it's been off since they moved to CloudFlare.

Greek banks bleed, 1bn withdrawn in a day submitted by Dumbtickles to Worldnews

This could cause some serious disruptions in the short term, and will prove tragic if Greece exits the Euro.
