The internet is just getting more and more constricted, manipulative and less fun by the day. There's always some fucker scheming to squeeze that last bit of profit out of it, to lock down that last revenue stream. There's going to be pretty much two internets in the future, a shitty cobbled together peer to peer thing for people who want to do stuff without being monitored or banhammered every time they step outside the groupthink and the megacorp inc internet that you plug directly into your limbic system to get virtually pleasured while the elite program you to behave like they want you to.

Why do some people have incredible levels of self control while others just shovel as many drugs/tats/Doritos into their face as they can? submitted by Justaddcoffee to AskVoat

Theres another layer to this. I read a book called 'In the realm of the hungry ghosts' written by a doctor who specialises in addiction treatment and he describes the way the brain forms as a kid and how the way you're raised contributes to your dopamine receptor levels.

He says that what researchers have found is that a good relationship with your parents, but your mother particularly (he really emphasises the role of the mother) providing you a loving environment when you're little stimulates the formation of those receptors. The result being that people who come out of that environment feel satisfied and happy with relatively low levels of dopamine release (ie.lots of receptors reacting to a little bit of dopamine= feelsgood), meaning they don't have to do much to stimulate it. ie. they don't need loads of gross food or drugs, alcohol etc.

On the other hand people who have lower level of dopamine receptors require much greater levels of stimulation to produce higher levels of dopamine in their brains to get the same effects. A lot of people this means that they take a shortcut through using things like alcohol and cocaine to flood their brains with dopamine, except in the long run the brain naturally compensates by further reducing the number of recepters and you get into the vicious cycle of addiction.

so all that stuff you talk about is obviously important but it seems like there is an even more fundamental level which is just having a mum that loves you and is there for you, with all the dual income stuff going on now is a bit of a worry.

Also on an anecdotal level I was a teacher for around 5 years and it seemed pretty noticeable when kids had their mum at home taking care of them. They seemed a lot more relaxed and even-keeled, I noticed that before I read the book so it wasn't just confirmation bias.

That's the strangest thing of the whole saga. He was basically arguing for non-discriminatory hiring policies.

When I read his 'manifesto' along with the reply from the HR manager, it was the condescending, dismissive and basically dumb reply from the HR person that really struck me. I thought, well everyone is going to see this for what it is, it's just too obvious how ideologically blinkered this woman is, to the point where she can't even behave rationally.... but no, the exact opposite happened.

As a side note, the article talks about 'to the left of Marx and Lenin' and I just had to nitpick. If you're writing articles don't reference things you don't understand. It just reflects badly on the rest of what you're saying.

The rohinga have nothing to do with the middle east. They're a Burmese ethnic group that the Burmese government is ethnically cleansing at this moment, you know, raping and torturing children then murdering them, the whole bit.

These people have literally less than nothing to do with anything in the middle-east. They're poor subsistence villagers in the jungle in the middle of nowhere with a modern army after them because they're not buddhist. The pope is apologising because he visited Burma and and no-one is doing shit to protect these people despite the fact that everyone knows what's happening.

It's the same old shit like south Sudan, Rwanda, the Kurds under Saddam, where all the surrounding countries sit back and watch and go 'Well, it's terrible , our heart goes out these people! But what could we possibly do?' "HEY LOOK AT THIS MUTHAFUCKA HERE THREATENING TO NATIONALISE THE OIL INDUSTRY!!!!!!!!!!! DON'T YOU FUCKIN TOUCH OUR FRIEND'S PROFITS CUNT!!!!!!!"
