Their net salary is more than a lot of free people's. Why hate on people actually doing something rather than just sitting around. These programs are usually (always?) voluntary. People hate just sitting and doing nothing. Why not let them actually try to provide value to society especially when...

Companies wouldn't pay fair wages for prisoners to do work for them. There's a ton of risk and red tape to go through so it wouldn't be profitable. So if you're going to give them a fair wage for work then their options are to lift weights, get educated, sit and do nothing, or whatever. If...

Private prisons are terrible. I'm not getting into that here, but what better way to rehabilitate people than to stick them in a workforce and have them do the daily grind that we all have to do? Other stuff is necessary too, but why not let them volunteer to do this too?
