What, if anything, is too serious to joke about? submitted by BRITTEACH to AskVoat

lodro 0 points 45 points (+45|-0) ago

I agree; nothing is too serious to be joked about. But some situations don't call for humor.

e.g. I would not joke about how my fat gym teacher died of a heart attack during his funeral service. But I wouldn't hesitate to joke about it in another setting.

Very funny, but not science. Repost in videos or funny.

What your suggestion for an anti-voting manipulation mechanism? submitted by twelveinchtip to AskVoat

lodro 1 points -1 points (+0|-1) ago

What about larger cases? Not all cases of vote manipulation will be trivially small or unimportant.

What about an entity with a botnet that gradually comes to control hundreds of accounts? If I had such a system in place, I could rent my services to companies with a vested interest in this or that kind of topic being up or downvoted. Or a government could use such a system to manipulate the visibility and apparent community approval of certain kinds of political content, or news about government actions.

Vote manipulation will be very important here if the site continues to grow. It's a huge deal on Reddit.

No need to be rude about it...though you have a good point. This isn't Reddit. And jailbait material isn't the same as pedo, and isn't a legal threat if it's legal where Voat is hosted.

Still, I think it's important to give users the power to filter content like that without having to view it first - both as a legal protection for users in the US etc, and because most of us have no interest in stumbling on that by accident.

But it's a discussion for another thread..

It's a problem for a large portion of the potential userbase... :/ At any rate, it's far off topic in this thread and you don't seem like a very reasonable conversation partner, so let's drop it.
