Getting a 'free' phone from large carriers and signing two year contracts.

Doing the math reveals that it's far more expensive to sign a contract and pay for the device through payments. Over the course of the two years, it's about $600 less expensive to just buy a new phone. I have found I am able to halve my monthly phone bill by switching to a pay as you go service that uses the same network.

So I save money on the device, and the service. But until I actually did the work of finding out the facts, I thought I was so cool with a 'free' phone from a major carrier. I was wrong.

No. You can eat the same amount in calories from two different foods, and one will treat your body better than the other.

I said 'phone' not 'phones'. You basically said I was wrong, but you are comparing different situations. My description could have been more detailed so it was easy to assume. If you want to get down and argue about nuance fine, we will find all kinds of different outcomes for all kinds of different situations. The general idea is that it is more expensive to pay a major carrier for a phone and service than it is to bring your own phone and use a pay as you go service, which is what I have found.
