In spite of many people wanting to switch to Linux from Windows, lets make a thread on super simple useful things like terminal commands in Linux that help people get started. submitted by motoguy to technology

Ha I just installed Linux Mint today and am playing with it now. I think I will hold off on the command prompt for now but will save this thread for later reading once I gain more experience. So thanks for starting this thread.

About restarting the GUI, I guess that is like killing Windows explorer.exe in task Manager when it freezes? I read in one of the startup docs about new features that you can press Control-Alt-Escape to restart the desktop GUI if it is frozen. I hope I remember this if it ever freezes.

Linux Mint is really pretty and intuitive to use. It seems to have tons of functionality out of the box. I was also pleasantly surprised to find that my everyday Office documents open in LibreOffice - that was a real unexpected bonus! Also the game I just bought - Pillars of Eternity - is available for Linux! That's the next thing I have to try out.

I do have to say that installation was a real pain and took me forever to figure out how to install it dual boot with Windows. I was able to shrink the Windows partition and then create a swap partition and root partition, but only after tons and tons of reading and scratching my head. But it installed easily and flawlessly after that.

P.S. I am an old retired guy so this is challenging and fun a the same time.

Zeb was a vocal, happy, affectionate, loyal, brave and loving little buddy. I got him with his brother Kai from a feral kitten rescue organization. It took him a while to warm up but he became very attached to his family. He loved to crawl under the covers in the morning for a cuddle. He loved playing "chase the cookie' where I threw treats in random directions for him and his brother Kai to chase. He adored going outside and would caterwaul incessantly after breakfast until I let him out. Our street has a low speed limit so I thought he would be OK outside. He was killed this morning by a hit and run driver without the decency to stop, leaving me to find him on the side of the road and wonder if he suffered long. He was only three and I thought we had at least another 15 years to love each other. He is buried in the forest he loved to wander, under a small flowering tree, with his favourite toys and cookies and the blanket he would crawl under when it got cold in wintertime.

I am devastated and just wanted to share a glimmer of the wonderful little creature I was privileged to share three years with. I still have his brother but he is already wandering he house calling for his missing sibling.

Thanks for understanding ... I'm sure many folks here understand what it is like to lose a furbaby.

I wish this asshole's gun had backfired and killed him. That would be appropriate.

Meeting my husband 25 years ago. We're one of those lucky couples who are compatible and stayed together because we still love each other and enjoy each other's company.

My dad was an engineer and had a DEC PDP-8/E in his office. I remember playing Lunar Lander on it around 1969. The game was loaded from punched paper tape, and the interface was a teletype machine and a big roll of cheap paper. I never won that darn game.
