What are some tips for saving money on food? submitted by TaxPoetic to AskVoat

Meal plan. And there's a million ways to do it, but some of the things I do are:

  • Look at the grocery ads to get an idea for what's on sale, and buy based on what is cheap - not what you're hungry for. Further to that, too many people think they need to shop at a single store. It's worth the extra 2 minutes in the car to save $20-30 on groceries!

  • Plan your meals based on the cost per serving. If chicken breasts (average 8oz) cost $1.99/lb, each one of those chicken breasts cost $1 to eat. When you start breaking down costs, you'll be shocked to see how much you're actually spending towards each item, and maybe be inclined to save more. I make a week's worth of egg muffins and kale smoothies. Breakfast costs me about $2/day now, instead of stopping at the drive through and spending 2-3 times as much.

  • Buy frozen or canned vegetables when/if you can. They're usually flash frozen, and just as usable for most recipes. If you're keeping your sodium in check though, look at labels on cans.

  • Stop buying iceberg lettuce. It's terrible, and you aren't going to use the whole thing anyway. Spinach, chard and especially kale (I can get 3-4lbs of kale for $1.69) go a lot further in the kitchen. The pinnacle of iceberg lettuce is the wedge salad. Think about that.

  • Buy frozen vegetables when you can. They're usually flash frozen, and just as usable for most recipes.

  • Shop seasonal fruits and vegetables. Peaches in December are going to cost more than they will in July. You don't have to buy local, but you can find things that are grown regionally and they'll likely be less expensive. Oranges in California and Florida cost less than they do in Nebraska.

  • If your grocery store offers a 10 for 10 or similar deal, check the individual item cost. Is it cheaper to just get the 5 apples you need? Sometimes it is!

  • If there's one near you, check a butcher shop for prices on poultry, beef and pork. All the big box stores might be selling pork tenderloins "on sale" for $5/lb, but the shop down the street might have them for $3/lb year round (that's actually a terrible price, but still!)

  • If you do buy and freeze meats, make sure you use them. My parents have 2 refrigerators and a freezer chest FULL of chicken breast, steaks, etc.. and most of it is just ice balls at this point. Hundreds of dollars of meat ruined and just waiting to be thrown out.

  • Cook for leftovers if you want to save on multiple meals. Meatloaf is even better the next day!

If you wouldn't mind, please take that kind of nonsense and vitriol back to that other site.
