We require a photo ID to drink, start a business, fish, get on a an airplane, why is requiring one to vote such a bad thing? submitted by DrBerry to politics

helmetbox 37 points 98 points (+135|-37) ago

It addresses a problem that doesn't exist; voter fraud by pretending to be someone else isn't a big problem. Where I live, there's a voting roll with the name of each resident and when you go to vote they check your name off. Seems weird TBH but that's all that's needed when you think about it.

It also affects poor people disproportionately. Bernie Sanders had a great point, he said (paraphrase)

"It never occurred to me that the way to win an election was to stop people from voting"

Pretty sure this is an action majorly done by republicans (also the same culprits of gerrymandering). I think there's a big problem with the FEC (Federal Election Commission) - basically that their hands are tied ie. not able to enforce some laws in this election cycle.

Is it me, or are Voat users more politically "right" than Reddit users? submitted by smallberries to AskVoat

Left and Right issues are based on the merits of the story here.

Lol ya fucking right. The front page has been flooded with bullshit sources pushing a political agenda. It's disgraceful and frightening to realize that some people take these posts at face value. It's naiive to think voat is not susceptible to the same manipulation as everything else.

My philosophy is - question everything. Never assume someone is trustworthy unless they give you a source and an explanation for why that source should be trusted. Otherwise, trust what you read at your own risk.

The mining waste water spill in Colorado was predicted by a geologist long before it happened. He said the spill would be used as a "superfund campaign" for the EPA submitted by Grizmoblust to news

Do you like propaganda? Because this is how you propaganda.

This website is branded "The Miner". Think it's a coincidence that this waste water was created and abandoned by a mining company?

Edit: I looked into it... no reputable source is even acknowledging this letter was published... we're looking at a screenshot here. By far the best discussion here https://www.reddit.com/r/Libertarian/comments/3gq0x1/the_mining_wastewater_spill_in_colorado_was/

Edit 2: looked into the site a bit in another comment pretty sketchy. @PoliticalScientst @6double5321 might be interested

Edit 3: Credit to @ThisBozz for finding photo of newspaper

[OVERVIEW] What happened in the 24 hours after Puttitout awarded AskVoat to "she", while calling the community "vicious" submitted by Rea11yN0tMe to ProtectVoat

There's no way to derail information; that makes no sense. You can derail a conversation.

Don't you think it's disingenuous to claim that you were banned and not correct your post when you obviously realize that you're not banned?

I don't have the time or energy to read through your untitled archive links but I think people should be aware that there were already two 'Overviews' of this situation.

AskVoat & Atko Shitstorm of 2015

Do not let the Reddit-crowd shame you into self-censorship

Aren't you the one calling for censorship? This comment basically says - 'don't allow any discussion that goes against my post'. Also, you don't like @she because of things she says.

Was there a topic or viewpoint banned from /v/AskVoat? If there were, I think the admins would have taken much more serious action than un-defaulting.

Black Lives Matter Activist Arrested for Online Threat to Kill All White People In The Town in La Plata, Maryland submitted by pandabill to news

helmetbox 23 points -19 points (+4|-23) ago

You guys read too much propaganda (like this article). Black lives matter is about policing and have never committed any violence. Protesting is about the most American thing you can do and a perfectly logical reaction to people being killed by the state. Don't let the media misinform you.

Black mentally ill people killed by police are 11 times more likely than whites to be unarmed.

Black people in general who are killed by police are twice as likely as whites to be unarmed.

Black women represent an outrageously disproportionate percentage of police stops, arrests and cases of abuse by police.

Black teenagers are an astounding 21 times more likely to be killed by police than white teens.

Even though study after study shows that African Americans and whites use marijuana at the exact same rate, African Americans are up to 10 times more likely to be arrested for it.

All of those claims are sourced here

Mods of r/programming and r/linux are deleting threads about github.com's new, racist code of conduct submitted by gaftra to MeanwhileOnReddit

helmetbox 18 points -16 points (+2|-18) ago

People interpret that as they won't act on racism against white people but that's not what it says. It's also obviously untrue because that would be a horrible business tactic. Why would they do that?

It also says (above that)
