I see this being suggested recently, but I have to say that it doesn't seem like a viable alternative as much as everyone wishes to promote it (with little information on its sustainability other than development info from that user, it might just end up like pomf.se as we see today).

I don't believe it works for links in the very same page under Chrome, only those in a different domain.

The Debian core can handle other types of programs just fine though, you just won't get a 10-foot UI for it. Stating that it wouldn't be suitable at all is a bit misleading, especially when a more complete desktop set (XFCE, KDE, etc) can be installed right on it.
