Question about the free market/capitalism [serious] submitted by statik to Libertarian

b3k 0 points 16 points (+16|-0) ago

Government interference is what creates those fearful monopolies.

Take Comcast for instance: Did they pay property owners for all the dirt and utility poles they used to install their infrastructure? No, they got subsidies. And in many municipalities, they got franchise agreements. This means that the government granted them subsidies and monopolies as an incentive to install their infrastructure. Comcast are horrible, but their monopoly is a result of government interference.

Looking more broadly, government regulations tend to cement the positions of market leaders. (see: regulatory capture) So sure, libertarians are against corporate regulations. We're also against corporate welfare. We're also against shielding corporations from from lawsuits when they act unjustly.

Every time you use encryption, you're protecting someone who needs to use it to stay alive.

Best line from the article.

It's easier to fix than some of the other crapware installed with Java updates. I have my in-laws use Ninite to do as much as possible.

I agree. Anonymous boards have their place, but I like pseudonymity better than anonymity. In subs where I can get to know the other commenters, it can result in more thorough discossion with less effort.

I read the Mistborn series and Alloy of Law recently. It was my first experience with Sanderson's writing, which I liked. Better than the writing was the worldbuilding. I loved that the magic system which conserved energy .

You should check out all of his stand alone stuff before moving on to The Way of Kings.

I was wondering what of his I should read next. I read Mistborn, because it was recommended by a friend a few years ago, but Sanderson writes so much it's hard to decide where to go next.
