That's what MLK knew, and it's why he affected so much more change than Malcolm X.

The reality is that equality in America has never been taken, it's only ever been given. A white President signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Men voted to give women the right to vote. Straight supreme court justices decreed national marriage equality.

Any action that furthers the rift between the majority and a minority only serves to cause irreparable harm to the cause of the minority. In the current environment of racial tension, violence only provides ammunition to bigots that want to paint all minorities as ignorant animals that deserve police brutality, and alienates the moderate members of the majority that might have eventually joined the cause.

What does everyone have against sociopaths? submitted by Wargasm to AskVoat

astroskag 2 points 28 points (+30|-2) ago

This is false - sociopaths often make the best leaders, because while they may not care about the happiness of others for its own sake, they often realize that the emotional and mental well-being of others is central to their being productive. It may seem like a Vulcan-level of cold logic to keep people happy because that's how you get the best results from them, but the idea that sociopaths are all just a bunch of power-tripping sadists is a viewpoint shaped entirely by popular culture and not reality.

Are there any political or social issues where you're unsure which stance to take? submitted by profanion to askgoat

astroskag 1 points -1 points (+0|-1) ago

Wow, ignorance really is bliss. We're talking about issues so complex you can't even truly understand both sides without a lot of prerequisite knowledge that almost no individual person possesses the entirety of, and yet you can charge blindly forward based on what - a wikipedia article and some sound bites from people presented to you as experts? That's some hardcore Dunning-Kruger you've got going there.

We're talking about one of the fundamental weaknesses of a representative democracy, here - the idea that there's some issues that there's no reasonable way for a single person to fully understand the ripples of a decision across all the fields it encompasses, and yet that's what we expect of our lawmakers - yet you think somehow your testosterone level makes you exempt?

I guess the world needs people like you. Militaries, for instance, always need enlisted-rank dumb bullet sponges that can be coerced into unquestioning obedience because they believe information as presented is immutable. But I kind of wish we didn't let you vote.

Gender issues aren't a competition. There are advantages to being male, and there are disadvantages. And it's the same for women. But to use your own disadvantages as an excuse to disregard the disadvantages of someone else makes you part of the problem.

That works both ways. I'm not saying that all feminists, especially Tumblr-brand feminists, extend men that courtesy, but that's exactly what makes them toxic. To say "I don't care about the problems other people have, because I have problems, too" is to become just like them.

You rightfully feel excluded, but there are other areas where you've had a easier time of things than your female counterpart. In a perfect world, she'd show some empathy at your being left out (and ideally try to make it better - telling the department head "I don't feel right about going without LDV" would go a long way), and you'd sympathize with the times her gender has been a disadvantage.

But two wrongs don't make a right. Even if she's callous about it, that doesn't make it alright to use that as a reason to dismiss everyone's struggles everywhere.
