Bernie Sanders And Allies In Congress To Introduce $15 Federal Minimum Wage Wednesday submitted by flyawayhigh to news

Who said anything about equal wages? If the minimum wage is raised, then the wages for skilled workers will increase to correspond with that hike. This has happened time and again in history.

Bernie Sanders And Allies In Congress To Introduce $15 Federal Minimum Wage Wednesday submitted by flyawayhigh to news

The minimum wage should be attached to the cost of living, period. I can't believe so many people are okay with the taxpayers footing the bill to subsidize low wages. We are paying for food stamps and health care assistance for people that are working 40 hours a week or more at minimum wage, while fast food restaurants and companies like Wal-Mart are recording record profits. This is simply NOT acceptable.

Studies have shown that raising the minimum wage has virtually no effect on unemployment. Low wage workers (the people that actually spend the most money in our economy) will also have more expendable income. On top of that, history has shown that when the minimum wage is increased, skilled workers and college graduates have seen an increase in their wages and earning potential to correspond with it. I wish they would just attach the minimum wage to the cost of living so we don't have to keep debating this shit every few years.

What is your first memory of a major event? submitted by LizardBreathe to AskVoat

I was at the inauguration for president George H.W. Bush. My family was not Republican, but I grew up in D.C. and I think a lot of local people just went to be a part of something historic. I remember that everyone was given these tiny Maglite flashlights with the presidential seal on them to commemorate the event. I also remember the victory parade after Operation Desert Storm in 1991. They had B-2 Stealth bombers flying over the crowd. I think it might have been the first time they were ever displayed in public, and the crowd was going crazy. I have a very vivid memory of sitting on my older sister's shoulders during the fireworks display later that evening.

Don't we look like a friendly community submitted by Stansfield to whatever

I'm not sure at what point it started happening, but whenever I log in to Voat now, nearly all of the top comments I see across the entire site are hateful or bigoted. I have unsubscribed from subverses that I think perpetuate a lot of that stuff, but it seems to leak out all over the site. I absolutely understand the need for free speech, I just wish I didn't have to sift through so much bigotry before I see any positive contributions to discussions. When I first found Voat, I started showing it to all of my friends and trying to get people who I know create good content to start moving over here. In it's current state I would be embarrassed to show this website to anyone. Unfortunately, instead of creating it's own identity, the community of Voat has seemingly latched onto this idea of becoming the Anti-Reddit, for better or for worse.

Ease up buddy, I didn't claim that I wanted the site to be censored in any fashion. Of course I want free speech, or I wouldn't be here in the first place. I just said that Voat in it's current form does not come across as a friendly place for moderate people (i.e. the majority of users) to share ideas or content, and I do believe that is true. If things continue this way, the site will never grow beyond it's current user base and it will begin to alienate the moderate people that moved here in the first place, myself included. Again, I'm not asking for censorship at all, I'm just calling things like I see them. I spend less and less time on Voat than I did even a month ago, because the quality of content and discussion has taken a serious nose dive. No one wants another Reddit. I just don't think trying to become the polar opposite of Reddit is the right idea either. It's as if this whole site has been through a bad breakup and everyone is going to extremes to prove that they didn't even like their ex in the first place. It just feels toxic in here sometimes, and your comment is proof positive of that.

We're saying goodbye to global restrictions based on SCP and CCP submitted by Atko to announcements

I was just speaking in terms of his overall proposal of these options, which he clearly put a lot of thought and effort into. Though I personally believe shifting from a Point-Based to a Time-Based system is ultimately the best of the four.
