Google Play Store Rejects App For Using the Word "BitTorrent" submitted by fluxusp to technology

Wharleas 1 points 18 points (+19|-1) ago

What really happened:

  • App mentions "bittorrent" in name, and it is a torrent client
  • Google's policy is that you can't mention other people's trademarks or brands in your app's title
  • "BitTorrent" is technically the name of BitTorrent Inc. (stupid, I know)
  • These guys have been getting away with it for a while but recently Google noticed and told them they're being removed because they mention "BitTorrent" which they consider a brand

It's a bit rich for Google to go after torrent clients when their store is rife with malware, spyware, ad infested crapware and outright viruses. But the article title is a bit sensationalist. Sounds just like a stupid rule in a stupid walled garden to me rather than an outright attack on torrents. If it is meant to target torrents, there is no real evidence for it here.

By the way, if anyone missed the memo, F-Droid is a repository for open source android apps, and a great alternative to Play Store. It doesn't have as many apps unfortunately, but it does have a lot of useful ones.

All English Dictionaries are erased from existence, with the exception of Urban Dictionary. How screwed are we and how long until our language goes to shit? submitted by Atiim01 to AskVoat

Wharleas 0 points 10 points (+10|-0) ago

Dictionaries don't determine language, it's the other way around. I'm guessing you want to imply that people learn English by dictionaries, but they don't. They learn from hearing their parents and friends speak.

A simple dictionary can be created in a year, and a comprehensive one can be easily created in a lifetime. With today's computer technology large chunks of dictionary creation might even be automated. The time it takes to make a new dictionary isn't anywhere near the time needed for language to shift, and you haven't even said what happens to say English-German dictionaries.

And since you insist that somehow only Urban Dictionary is allowed to exist from then on, I'm guessing the current curators of serious dictionaries will simply move to Urban Dictionary. As people start using UD as an actual dictionary, they will swamp the current userbase, and UD will quickly stop being a dictionary of mainly slang and turn into Wiktionary. The government or academia would probably take charge of UD given its new importance for the English language.

What would not happen: We would not all suddenly start talking in slang. Similar to how before the internet, if you secretly swapped someone's English dictionary with a French one, the result is not that they start speaking French, but simply that they occasionally misuse a word.

"We've centralized all of our data to a guy called Mark Zuckerberg" says Pirate Bay Founder submitted by Some_Guy_from_RI to technology

"We" have? Speak for yourself, kemosabe.

Exactly. There's a lot of people who don't put their whole lives on Facebook. The problem is well understood. Instead of holding up these people as a positive example and encouraging more careful use of similar services in the future, this guy instead pretends that no progress at all has been made since late 2000's when Facebook first went public. Bunch of FUD that only keeps everyone passive.

Irrefutable proof search engines have gone to complete SHIT submitted by stillinit to technology

Wharleas 2 points -1 points (+1|-2) ago

No, actually. I don't understand where all these people who do, are coming from.

Then perhaps this question is not for you. Perhaps the things you search for are easy to find, but stating this doesn't really help anyone else.

I'm not going to apologize for supporting my own race. submitted by vastrightwing to AskVoat

I agree that the post is lame, but what is the point of /v/AskVoat anyway? "reddit has one so we should too"?

Prosecutors said the 33-year-old ripped off Microsoft Corp. by manufacturing 28,000 counterfeit discs with the company's Windows operating system on them. He was convicted of conspiracy and copyright infringement, which brought a 15-month prison sentence and a $50,000 fine.

Oh please. He made and sold a bunch of warez. Wtf did he expect? Judge even went the extra mile and gave him plausible deniability. He probably wouldn't serve most of that sentence anyway.

I admire the mission of fighting planned obsolescence, but he flat out did something illegal. Should have just installed Linux with Wine on those PCs.
