Whatever you do, don't complain about this, as that would lead you to being labelled as a troublemaker, or misogynist, or whatever. The only thing you can do is smile politely, keep quiet, and carry on doing your work as normal. Since your colleague is, in your own words, "very capable", there is nothing you can do. Just accept that there will be other opportunities where you will be favoured. Do not be bitter about this, as this will only affect your postition adversely. There will be other awards dinners.

I think it more likely that he has used the N-word for rhetorical effect. If you read his capitalisation as an alternative to inverted commas his remark makes good rhetorical sense: "... a successful business man, not a 'n-word'...". Unless there is independent evidence that he was a racist it might be better to stick to a charitable interpretation. That said, it's an unfortunate choice of words, as there are plenty of people who will pounce on the use of the word without examining whether it was used with the aim of offending or with the aim of making a rhetorical point.

So basically all the experts didn't want it, and all the stupid people who didn't work hard enough at school to get better jobs wanted it.

Voat is full of angry middle-aged (and older) white guys who want to blame other people for their failures. They'll blame black people, muslims, jews, women, gay people, asians, or anyone who looks or thinks a little bit different from them, and curse them for cheating or changing society - anything to avoid admitting their own ineffectuality.
