Just looked up the eight stages of civilization, man that is spot on.
- From bondage to spiritual growth
- From spiritual growth to great courage
- From courage to liberty
- From liberty to abundance
- From abundance to complacency
- From complacency to apathy
- From apathy to dependence
- From dependence back to bondage
fourth turning of the generation
And now I understand the stauss-howe generation theory too!
- First Turning - High
- Second Turning - Awakening
- Third Turning - Unraveling
- Fourth Turning - Crisis
The wikipedia entry has our current stages as:
Millennial Saeculum (75 + years)
|Generation||Generation Archetype||Year Span||Entered childhood in a||Turning Year Span|
|Baby Boom Generation||Prophet (Idealist)||1943–1960 (18)||1st Turning: High: Superpower America, Golden Age of Capitalism||1946–1964 (18)|
|13th Generation (Generation X)2||Nomad (Reactive)||1961–1981 (21)||2nd Turning: Awakening: Consciousness Revolution, Fourth Great Awakening||1964–1984 (20)|
|Millennial Generation (Generation Y)3||Hero (Civic)||1982–2004 (23)||3rd Turning: Unraveling: Culture Wars, Postmodernism, Neoliberalism||1984–2008 (24)|
|Homeland Generation (Generation Z)4||Artist (Adaptive)||2005–present (age 13)||4th Turning: Crisis: Great Recession, War on Terror||2008-|
According to that we're 13 years into the 4th turning (crisis) which means we probably have another 5-15 years to go.
Really helps to put things in perspective and is generally lacking in social discussions. I can't believe I've never studied up on these before.
Edit: link formatting, added fourth turning table

I wouldn't be surprised to see more free speech and privacy oriented platforms in the future.
People are starting to see what companies like Facebook do and are getting away from it. Privacy and security is the future. Implementation of that seems to be the hard part.

The last year and a half has been like watching millions of Americans who grew up without a father suddenly having to deal with an authoritative father figure in their lives. Temper tantrums galore, hissy fits, etc. They may not know it yet but this is good for them, and once they get through this stage they'll look back on the man that stepped into the picture with fondness for getting their lives back on track. They'll despise the weak men (and women) that had previously let them live out their Peter Pan fantasies well into adulthood instead of taking on the challenge that is life.

I can't help that think that historically such an island, lacking in security and high in value, would find itself conquered with the conquering men taking the spoils (land, property, women...). I would not be surprised if some modern equivalent plays out here in time.
