Private Internet Access. It's a paid service, but the install and interface is really good and they have support. The biggest attraction for me is that they do not keep logs by design. This way if a government entity tries to force them to turn over user activity they can say "fuck off, there is literally nothing we can give you."

Why the fuck some people prefer mobile to desktop/laptop? submitted by i_am_triggered to whatever

Prophet_60091_ 0 points 37 points (+37|-0) ago

Mobile and tablets are for consuming, not creating. The fact that the average user could CREATE as well as consume is what set the internet apart from other mediums where previously the user only consumed. (like radio/television/movies)

Those who own old world media companies took forever to understand this when the internet first caught on. They kept thinking of the internet as a pay for access distribution platform.

Perhaps this is a little too tinfoil hat of me, but I felt like the push towards tablets and mobile, and the cry of PC is dead was an attempt to further push users back into a passive consumption model.

Any citations to back these up? My friends/family seriously believe the score is: left innocent, right 1 murder/terrorist attack in Charlottesville. If I just show them a graphic they'll ask for sources. (Though to be fair, if I provide sources they'll call them biased and not trustworthy. Ultimately nothing will convince them and it's a losing game, but still)

The main reason I come to voat is that there's almost nowhere else to go to find out what's actually fucking going on in the country submitted by GoatyMcGoatface to Showerthoughts

Search for Unfilter podcast, seriously. Best independent news aggregate/analysis podcast out there in my opinion. Hosts are also both tech professionals by trade so they can dissect bullshit in news stories related to tech (like stories about hacking and email servers) in a way your average clueless reporter can't. Listener supported, no ads, no outside groups pushing an agenda.

Why are we letting zealots poison rational arguments? submitted by teatime to AskVoat

Prophet_60091_ 1 points 0 points (+1|-1) ago

I think the assumption that intelligent debate is the goal, or the means by which "good" political decisions are made is flawed. I don't think intelligent debate has ever played a truly meaningful roll in politics.

The ideal of calm, rational adults discussing the pros and cons of a policy based off of well reasoned, evidence based arguments and logic is just that, an ideal. There is so much flawed with this ideal that it never works IRL.

People who hold to this ideal and try to live it in real life end up getting destroyed in politics. The worst part s that these "virtuous idiots" can't comprehend why logic and reason aren't working.

Here's why it doesn't work:

1) Government doesn't govern for what is "best for society." Despite the lies we tell ourselves, that's not what politicians are there for. They don't give a flying fuck if some policy is bad for the society at large if it is good for the people who support/pay them. You can argue till you're blue in the face about defense spending and if that money would better serve the people if it was used on infrastructure. It doesn't fucking matter because "how can tax payer money best be used to improve the lives of the tax payers?" Was never the question to begin with!

2) Most importantly people are tribal and irrational as fuck. Individualism and rational decision making are relatively new things, and only became popular when pushed by some crazy fringe thinkers during the enlightenment. Humans are heard animals and more at home dancing around a fire before going off to attack a slightly different neighboring tribe.

We collectivise everything. We don't see people as individuals, but rather, members of a block. By this way we justify harming individuals who happen to be connected to a block in some way, even if those people individually never did anything against us.

This is the natural state of humanity. You don't win or convince people by facts. You win by being emotionally correct on an issue. Emotional correctness truly is the key.

Please don't get me wrong; I'm in complete agreement with you that I wish the world did value educated debate and open-mindedness, but if you keep trying to play that game you'll lose. Like trying to play chess with a pigeon, they'll still just knock over the pieces, shit in the board, and declare victory.
