It needs to be pointed out that the default setting should be that the mod-downvoted comments are visible. Otherwise, users who don't know that the setting exists will experience a censored Voat.

That can happen even with only one moderator. Do you think Laurelai wouldn't ban based on comment histories if he was the only moderator of a sub? The problem is that once such a moderator gets into position, there's no way to get rid of him (or her, as is more often the case).

This is the way USENET worked. A comma-delimited list would define the subverses in which the submission would be visible. On USENET, it was also possible to control the Newsgroups in which the replies were visible. Just because you replied to a post that was crossposted didn't mean that the reply...

If the admins start supporting censorship, then there's nothing more we can do. They can remove any anti-censorship protections implemented today.

Reddit released their software on GitHub, so Voat could have just pulled that code, and then they wouldn't have all of these subtle bugs here and there.
