I believe they're pulling out for two reasons. The first is an overabundance of caution. What the law says and how it gets interpreted, especially against certain groups, are often two different things. And the second reason is a boycott. I'm speculating about the second reason, but I hope it's true.

I think they had trouble coordinating. I'm pretty sure they only knew each other on Reddit, not irl. So scheduling was probably difficult.

I thought I'd make it even more obvious who I am with this new user name. You may recognize me from reddit as /u/Mises2Peaces or, if you've been there a while, my old (wrongfully) shadowbanned account /u/drmandible. Cheers!

Love it! I came here to say something like this and found that you'd already done it better than I would have. Are you really a chemist?

Why doesn't Voat start a KickStarter or a GoFundMe? I see a lot of people that want to donate but are intimidated by bitcoin submitted by lordgenome to AskVoat

It's U.S. law that any company operating as a financial service provider ask for those things. It's called KYC (Know Your Customer). They'd get shut down if they didn't ask. Most countries have similar laws.

If it's any consolation, www.circle.com and www.coinbase.com are multi-million dollar companies. They probably aren't going to steal your identity.
