Why should science be treated any differently than; gun ownership, abortion, traffic laws, taxes, economic policy, hiring laws, etc?

Politicians will never educate themselves on a topic because that might change their opinion, and they'd be seen as "weak". Then they wouldn't win the next election against a "strong" candidate, who never "flip-flopped" on the issues.
