It is fluorescent because they inserted a gene from a jellyfish that makes the cats cells produce green fluorescent proteins. The cool thing about making animals fluoresce like this is that you can tie the fluorescence to other proteins/things. In this case they made it so for every fluorescent protein expressed there would also be a potential AIDS fighting protein. Then they can take the cats that fluoresce and test different proteins to see how well they fight off AIDS.

I don't know if I have ever heard of someone attaching fluorescent proteins to endorphins but that is the general idea. They have attached fluorescent proteins to calcium to watch a fish think.

Very cool. If only I could think in terms of orders of magnitude maybe I could wrap my head around how big the universe actually is.
