Scotland to ban GM crop growing. submitted by Ex-Redditor to Worldnews

COUSCOUS 5 points -4 points (+1|-5) ago

GMO is in most cases used to yield more food,

They claim that. http://www.ucsusa.org/food_and_agriculture/our-failing-food-system/genetic-engineering/failure-to-yield.html#.VcciQ_mqpBc

to decrease pesticides due to increased tolerance

"A study by David Mortensen, a plant ecologist at Pennsylvania State University in University Park, predicts that total herbicide use in the United States will rise from around 1.5 kilograms per hectare in 2013 to more than 3.5 kilograms per hectare in 2025 as a direct result of GM crop use."

Article here: http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/a-hard-look-at-3-myths-about-genetically-modified-crops/

And here: http://www.forbes.com/sites/bethhoffman/2013/07/02/gmo-crops-mean-more-herbicide-not-less/

Also better tolerance for droughts or cold depending on location.

Cross breeding has been successfully doing that for years. Do not mix cross breeding with GMO. An interesting Article here: http://www.i-sis.org.uk/GM_Crops_and_Water_a_Recipe_for_Disaster.php

A quote: "but evidence from Howard Vlieger, a farmer who grew both GM and non-GM varieties of corn and soybean showed that his GM varieties suffered more than the conventional varieties."

that corn is not grown in Scotland.

Apparently you are right. Here is a quote from the Scottish Rural affairs minister,: "There is no evidence of significant demand for GM products by Scottish consumers and I am concerned that allowing GM crops to be grown in Scotland would damage our clean and green brand, thereby gambling with the future of our £14bn food and drink sector."

I think it is wonderful that Democracy is working within the Scottish Government. The lies of production yield, that we cannot produce enough, of the poisoning of the ecosystem, and of the lining of the Corporations pockets. These lies are all coming out. How about just informing the public as to what is in their food? Let consumers make their own choices, oh that's right, the Corporations don't make as much that way.

LOL, here is another interesting article. http://www.soilassociation.org/gm

enjoy
