That shirt is cool, I like it. Yeah shorts would be fine with it so long as the shirt sleeves were rolled up and the shorts are plain and light in colour to offer some contrast with the shirt. You could always go with chinos or a more lightweight material such linen trousers too.

Gap do solid jeans for a reasonable price and I'd recommend their slim cut. As for shirts uniqlo's oxford shirts are hard to beat for the price too. If you're going for a couple pairs of jeans and shirts, I'd say go with one pair of light slim denim, one dark/indigo pair and white and blue oxford shirts. These items are pretty much staples before experimenting and making things more interesting.
