US-bound Muslim travellers are stopped from boarding flights as Trump's ban sweeps into force submitted by Joker68 to news

I'd love to sit in on a modern journalism course just to hear what's being taught these days, because, back when I took some courses, this headline would have been written more like, "Non-US citizens attempting to board US-bound flights without Visas blocked as Trump's EO forces Customs agents to follow long-standing US laws," although, that would probably be marked down for being too wordy. It used to be that a headline was intended to describe the actual facts of an event in abbreviated form, rather than slant the reader toward a particular agenda.

Plus it's not the executive order that's blocking them - it's the current laws as passed by the legislature and signed into law by former presidents. Amazing how irate people get when existing laws suddenly start being enforced instead of ignored. Truly sad that we even need a stack of executive orders filled with line after line stating, "such and such law shall be enforced as written." Even sadder that mainstream news sources lead people to believe that writing executive orders ordering to enforce existing laws is somehow tyranny, fascism, racism, xenophobia, etc. etc. etc.

TREASON? Video surfaces of Hillary admitting she was in contact with foreign leaders interfering in our election! submitted by GizaDog to news

It's kind of like racism. It's only treason when Republicans do it. When Democrats do it, it was necessary in order to keep a fair balance.

As Trump wages war on legal marijuana, military veterans side with pot submitted by NicolasDavis to news

AndinBriwel 2 points -2 points (+0|-2) ago

Unfortunately, marijuana is not legal for posession, consumption or distribution anywhere in the U.S. Currently the DOJ and AG simply do not enforce current U.S. laws. New legislation and FDA action is needed to make it fully legal. We can argue all day abiut whether that should or shouldn't happen, but the way our federal government's civics work is that laws are written and passed in congress then enacted by the president. That hasn't happened yet, with regard to decriminlizing marijuana.

What has happened to liberals and progressives? Fighting against free speech and calling people too stupid to vote (we call it democracy)? submitted by RedditDead2005-2015 to politics

You said, " I never fought against people's rights to express opinions (except ..." Let's be honest, it really doesn't matter what you put after the, "except". That seed that believes there is some opinion that should be so obviously disgusting to everyone that it shouldn't be allowed to be expressed openly will always grow into narrowing further and further exactly what type of dissent is allowed, until no dissent is allowed. As long as any particular type of dissent is okay to silence, every type of dissent will eventually be okay to silence. FWIW, I strongly disagree with the positions and methods of the WBC people, but I'm also thankful we live in a country where even disgusting, disrespectful ideas and opinions are constitutionally protected, so as long as they do their thing in a legal manner on public property, or their own private property, I would never fight to silence them using law. I would, however, present the alternate viewpoint and try to change their minds, individual by individual, as well as hope they would choose to not behave such ways. As long as my freedom is as protected as theirs, I'll be able to do exactly that.
