This is something I've been trying to argue since Columbine. Perhaps even before. This shit happens because primarily because these young men do not see a society that has a place for them. They do not see a society that will value them. Maybe they try, maybe they don't. But they're young and stupid and have no idea nor guidance as to what they're doing.

I was a maladjusted kid too. Very maladjusted. But I had a step father who was really good to me. He always loved me. He may not have had the resources to buy me nice things or take me places or any of that shit, but he always had time for me. He had other kids, but he considered me his first. He encouraged me to be an active member of his family and a role model to my younger siblings, even the ones he had with his second wife after divorcing my mother. His family and his friends always considered me a member of the family. They always had a couch for me to sleep on and a hot meal on the table if I needed it. Every single one of them. His mother, Nana, cooked a ham and a turkey every weekend and if I showed up to her door on Sunday, I had as much as I could eat waiting for me.

They weren't even blood related to me. Just people who, despite their flaws, believed very strongly that you never abandon a family member.

He taught me to box, and fish. He'd take me camping and boating. He was always a phone call away. I went through a lot of hard times, but I was always able to keep in the back of my mind that my dad (I did not distinguish his role from that of my biological father's. The two of them were friends and occasional drinking buddies and appreciated one another's contribution to my life) wanted the best for me.

When you're certain that at least one person on the planet loves you, it's hard to think of the rest of the people on the planet as unworthy of love. As unloved by someone else.

Yeah. There are assholes. There are dickheads. But when you know someone cares about you, it's really counterintuitive to decide that everyone and anyone is.

I'm certain that I share a lot of experiences with most of these mass shooter kids. Just as certain as I am that one experience that they didn't have was the father's love that I got from Bill. He was tough, a teamster type, but boy did he love his kids. He taught us to stick up for ourselves and others.

I don't think there's any need to excuse these kids' actions. They're responsible for them. If we want to prevent them in the future, and I think we can, we're going to need to realistically look at the cause. A deep and draining lonliness that a champ like my step father could easily disabuse them of. For lacking that, I feel bad for them. I also feel for their victims.

The start of this? We really need to stop villifying and alienating fathers from their children, treating them like paychecks to be cashed. We need to treat them as valuable and valued so that they participate instead of running. And for those who cannot get a participatory father figure, we really need to figure out how to get that for them.

And I bet they're all 1/16th Cherokee on their mother's side, too.

The authoritarian left's idea that speech should be punished and limited if they don't like it isn't helping at all.

My opinion is that the earth is flat.

There are wrong, ie factually inaccurate, opinions.
